Chapel Oaks Funeral Home was started in 1988 by Chris Hutton in Holton. Wayne Leiker joined in 1990 as manager and later became a partner with Hutton when they purchased Tessendorf Mortuary in Onaga in 1993. The partnership expanded significantly in 1997 with the acquisition of the Schroeder Mortuaries in Hiawatha and Horton, at which time Jay Brock joined as a partner.

By 1999, the Chapel Oaks family of funeral homes had grown to include newly built facilities in Highland and Hoyt. Wayne Leiker and Jay Brock continue to operate the business across its multiple locations in northeast Kansas.
