Burns Funeral Home was founded in 1939 by Martin J. Burns, Sr., who worked as an ice and coal delivery man before entering funeral service. Martin's wife, Grace McNeill, also earned her funeral director's license to work alongside him in the family business. The funeral home's first location opened at 1428 E. Columbia Ave. in Philadelphia, where Martin's daily visits to homes delivering ice and coal helped him build trust within the community.
In 1957, Martin and Grace moved to the Torresdale section of Philadelphia and converted their home into a second funeral home location. In the late 1980s, the family expanded to Levittown to serve the growing needs of Bucks County families. The funeral home has remained family owned and operated through multiple generations since its founding.
