Brown Colonial Mortuary was founded in 1927 by Harold R. Brown, who returned to Santa Ana after serving in Europe during World War I and working in the funeral industry in San Francisco. He initially partnered with Samuel Harrel to establish the firm at 17th and Sycamore streets in a converted residence. In the mid-1930s, Emil Wagner purchased Mr. Harrel's interest, and the partners opened their current modern facility in September 1937 directly across the street from the original location.
