Brown & Hickey Funeral Home was established in 1925 by Robert McF. Brown, a retired Metropolitan Police officer and Scotland native, who opened Belmont's first storefront undertaking parlor with his son James. The business moved to its permanent location at 36 Trapelo Road in 1934, where it has remained for over 90 years. The funeral home is currently owned and operated by fourth-generation family members Robert McF. Brown, Scott D. Brown, and Nicholas F. Brown, along with Sheila A. Hickey and Timothy W. Hickey.
Darthea Ford Brown became one of the first women in Massachusetts to earn a funeral director's license when she went to college for her credentials in the 1960s after her husband's death. The funeral home holds the funeral records for the former John J. Greene Funeral Home, acquired in 2013. Licensed funeral apprentice Liam J. Hickey-Sullivan is training at the facility, continuing the multi-generational tradition.
