Bolton Funeral Home was established in 1950 when Robert N. and Doris Bolton, Sr. purchased Walton Funeral Home from HomerWalton. The business transitioned from its original location adjacent to a mercantile store to Columbiana's first freestanding funeral home facility, converted from a former dentist office behind the old Shelby County Courthouse.
The Bolton family has deep roots in the community. Robert Bolton, Sr. served as Mayor of Columbiana, Shelby County Coroner, and Little League coach, and donated land that became Bolton Field, still used for girls' softball. Robert N. "Rob" Bolton, Jr. grew up working in the funeral home and continued the family operation.
