This funeral home was founded as a combination furniture and undertaking business on Bridge Street in 1887 by William H. Montgomery. He and several partners ran the business there until 1938 when they moved into a new building located at 303 South Cedar Avenue. In 1942 L. E. Conley bought into the ownership and the funeral home was named Conley Funeral Chapel. In 1965 it was sold to Darryl Wollin and renamed Conley-Wollin Funeral Chapel. In 1979 Gene Michaelson purchased this chapel along with one in West Concord and changed their names to Michaelson Funeral Homes. His son Cory joined the business in 1996 and they moved into the present location at 1930 Austin Road in 1998. Cory has owned the two funeral homes since October 1, 2006 then on July 10, 2008 he added the former Hanson Funeral Home in Kenyon to the Michaelson Funeral Home properties.

Arranging a funeral can be both emotionally challenging and financially burdensome. Many people have little knowledge about the funeral industry, and in such difficult times, they may be vulnerable to being deceived or taken advantage of.
To protect consumers, Michaelson Funeral Home is obligated to follow the guidelines outlined in the "Funeral Rule". Failure to comply with this rule could result in complaints being filed against the funeral home by the Federal Trade Commission.
The "Funeral Rule" was established in 1984 to ensure that all funeral homes, including Michaelson Funeral Home, provide customers with clear and accurate information about the products and services they offer. This includes providing price details over the phone upon request.
As part of the "Funeral Rule," Michaelson Funeral Home is required to offer a General Price List (GPL) to anyone who asks for it. This list includes various expenses related to funeral services, such as transportation to the cemetery in or around Steele County, as well as costs for viewing or visitation services.
Anyone who visits Michaelson Funeral Home at 1930 Austin Road in Owatonna, MN and asks about funeral arrangements is entitled to receive a free copy of the general price list. This applies to all individuals, regardless of whether they intend to purchase funeral services or not.
