Feggins Funeral Home was founded on March 5, 1956 by George Washington Feggins, a Tech Sergeant in the United States Army who graduated from McAllister School of Embalming in New York City. After completing his apprenticeship under Harry Giles, Mr. Feggins became a licensed mortician and established the funeral home to serve Mecklenburg County and surrounding areas. The firm initially provided both funeral and ambulance services.
Mr. Feggins, known as Daddy George, rebuilt the facility and held an open house ceremony on December 1, 1974. Feggins Funeral Home was the first and only African American funeral home to have a commercial float in the annual South Hill Christmas parade in 1971, winning second place for their float in 1977. The Feggins family has passed down funeral service techniques through multiple generations of family members and staff.
The funeral home continues to serve families of all ethnic backgrounds throughout South Hill and the surrounding counties. The firm maintains a tradition of community involvement through annual donations to charities and organizations.
