Elizabeth McCorkle Brice

YORK - Elizabeth McCorkle Brice, 85, of 200 Bratton Avenue passed away March 25, 2015 at the Wayne T Patrick Hospice House in Rock Hill.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at First Presbyterian Church of York on Friday, March 27, 2015 at 2:00 PM. Officiating will be the Rev. Ed Jillson and Rev. Thomas B. McPhail. The family will receive friends in the Parlor following the service.

There will be a private burial at Rose Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Brice was the daughter of the late Hugh Jetton McCorkle and Lula Belle Calhoun McCorkle. She was a graduate of York High School, attended Queens College, and was a graduate of the University of South Carolina. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, and a die-hard Gamecock fan.

Mrs. Brice was a member of First Presbyterian Church of York, where she served as a Deacon and was an active Elder and member of the hand bell choir. She was an active member of the Historical Commission, and possessed a vast knowledge of historical structures and architecture. She was a driving force in the beautification of downtown York. She was pivotal in street-scaping projects in downtown York and in planting trees and flowers along Congress Street and in other areas of the city.

The preservation, restoration and beautification of the York community remained a lifelong passion for her.

Mrs. Brice was well known for her love of flowers, and for the beautiful yard that she worked tirelessly for more than fifty years. She delighted in preparing flower arrangements for public and private events throughout the years, and loved to share both her knowledge of flowers and her arrangements with others.

She was a member of several bridge clubs, a book club, and a music group. She began learning to play the piano at age 75. She was an avid reader, but her favorite activity was playing golf, of the few vacations she allowed herself, they generally revolved around the location of a golf course. She was active and athletic for her entire lifetime, enjoyed Yoga and she participated in an aerobics group at the YMCA for many years.

She was a true southern lady who always put others before herself and lived life as an example to those around her. She was unfailing in her faith and showed her love for her church through her decades of service.

Her countless volunteer efforts are known to all those that they touched, from being a volunteer "pink lady" at the Divine Savior Hospital in her 30's to still volunteering to read to and with kindergarteners at age 85. A complete listing of her various service efforts ould be too numerous to set forth without missing any. The family would just ask that those who were touched by her caring and generosity simply take a moment to reflect on those memories - and pay it forward.

Mrs. Brice is survived by her son, Mac, and daughter-in-law Katie, of York, SC, 6 grandchildren, Olivia, Gabriella, Alex, Julia, Nick and Colby, her sister, Marjorie Claytor of Columbia, SC, her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jim and Ann Brice, of Flat Rock, NC, and numerous neices and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of almost 60 years, William M. Brice, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wayne T Patrick Hospice House, PO Box 993, Rock Hill, SC 29731 or to Finishing for the Future, c/o First Presbyterian Church, 10 W Liberty St, York, SC 29745.
