Doris Morgan Baker, 79, passed away May 7, 2015 at Harbor Chase Assisted Living Center in Rock Hill, SC.
On May 9, 2015 a family burial will take place at 1:00 PM in Rose Hill Cemetery in York followed by a memorial service at First Baptist Church in York at 2:00 PM with visitation at the church immediately after.
Doris was born August 14, 1935 in Charlotte, N.C. to Rosa McClurd and Raymond Dewey Morgan. She was raised in Derita, N.C. with her two younger sisters where she graduated from Harding High School in 1953. Upon graduating from The Woman's College of UNC in Greensboro, N.C. she married Bill Wiley and moved to York, S.C. where they raised their three children.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of York where she was a deacon, circle member and taught Sunday School to the children, the youth and later the women’s class. For many years Doris and Bill sponsored the annual summer church youth trip to Myrtle Beach.
Doris enjoyed volunteering in the community and served for many years as the community Chairman for the Easter Seals Society annual fundraising campaign and children’s handmade lily sale. She also volunteered in the gift shop and as a Pink Lady for the Divine Savior Hospital. In 1993, Doris was selected as Duchess of York for the annual Summerfest celebration.
Doris had a gift for hospitality and enjoyed entertaining in her home for the Book Club, Bridge Club, and Circle and regularly hosted visiting ministers. She loved to cook for her family and friends and spent countless hours in her father’s vegetable garden and in her kitchen preserving produce. She was devoted to regular exercise and led a ladies aerobics and toning class at the York Civic Center for more than twenty-five years.
After her youngest child left home to attend college, she enjoyed a career as the Lifestyle Editor for The Yorkville Enquirer newspaper and wrote numerous articles about local events, weddings, obituaries and a regular editorial, named Encounters.
In July 1996 Doris married Harry Baker and moved to Rock Hill, but continued teaching exercise and writing for the newspaper until she retired in 2005.
Doris was preceded in death by her first husband, William (Bill) R. Wiley, Jr. and her sister, Marie Yandle.
She is survived by her husband, Harry Baker; daughters Suzanne Hinson and husband, Ronnie; Valerie Watson and husband Rob; sons William (Billy) R. Wiley, III and wife Janice; Dan Baker and wife Joyce; Eric Baker and wife Polly; sister, Wilma Heafner and husband Zach; three granddaughters, Rose Fulton, Josie LaBarbera, and Sara Reid Baker: five grandsons, Patrick Wiley, Brandon Wiley, Nathan Wiley, Rob Alan Watson, & Will Watson: four nieces, and five great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the cheerful and devoted caregivers at HarborChase Memory Care Center in Rock Hill for their compassionate attention to Mom.
