Kay was born on April 12, 1923 in Hickory Grove, SC to Robert Wells and Minnie Fowler Buice. She attended Limestone College and served on the Student Council and was Hall President in her senior year. Kay graduated in 1945 with a degree in Elementary Education and her first teaching job was in Cliffside, NC. In 1947 Kay’s students entered her in the Quiz Kids Radio Best Teacher in America contest and she received a certificate. In 1950 Kay moved to Southern Pines and taught at the Southern Pines Middle School until 1983. Kay enjoyed teaching students the fundamentals but also encouraged learning through assembly programs, theatrical presentations, and dancing. Kay proudly said “I never taught a child (her “jewels” as she called them), I didn’t love”, “I loved teaching and the children kept me young”. Kay was a charter member of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority for Teachers.
Kay met Wayne Adams after moving to Southern Pines, and they married in 1961. The couple enjoyed a close relationship with family and friends. They often traveled to South Carolina and Mississippi to visit relatives. Kay remembers Wayne’s love for flying his Bonanza airplane and laughs about how she overcame her fear of flying to make Wayne happy. Kay loved people. She had a wonderful sense of humor and had a knack of putting people at ease around her. She always had a good story to tell and could bring out the best in anyone. She loved baking, cooking, canning and flower arranging. The family would like to thank all Kay’s kind and faithful friends who visited Kay and showed love and concern for her all these years, especially: Edith and Lacy Frye, Sue Williamson, Linda and Dick Mansmann.
Kay was a member of the Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Southern Pines, NC. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at 2 PM at the Hickory Grove Cemetery in Hickory Grove, SC.
