Rock Hill -- William "Bill" Henry Bennett, 92, of Rock Hill, formerly of York, died Saturday, August 2, 2014, at his home in Rock Hill.
The funeral will be at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at York A.R.P. Church. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday, August 4, 2014 from 6 - 8 PM at Bratton Funeral Home in York, and other times at the home of daughter Nancy Holmes, 1693 Farrow Dr, Rock Hill, SC.
Bill was a son of the late Charles P. Bennett and Olive McDaniel Bennett. He was a lifelong member of York A.R.P. Church. As a child, Bill and his brothers started their own circus, the Bennett Brothers Circus, which ran from 1929 - 1938 and performed in York, Rock Hill, Clover and Sharon. Bill later graduated from York High School in 1940 and Erskine College in 1950. Bill served in the United States Army Air Corp as a B29 pilot, retiring with the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He was also retired from Kanawha Insurance Company after a long career as an agent.
He is survived by wife Barbara Walker Bennett of Rock Hill, SC, daughters, Nancy Holmes (Rob) of Rock Hill, SC, Julie Madsen (Charlie) of Rock Hill, SC, Janet Plummer (Jimmy) of Charlotte, NC, Barbara Hewitt (Robert) of Belton, SC, brother Douglas Bennett (Jane) of Swansea, SC, sister Bonnie Lynch (Graham) of Winston Salem, NC, seven grandchildren, Jason Holmes, Julianne Holmes, Kirsten Davis, Lauren Madsen, Marshall Plummer, Will Preston, and Jack Preston, and one great grandson Knox Davis. In addition to his parents, Bill is preceded in death by sons, William "Billy" Bennett Jr., Craig Walker Bennett, and brothers and sister, Orin Bennett, Vera Poteat, Joe Bennett, Charles Bennett, and Stanley Bennett.
