Arley Warren
Warren, Arley P. Jr. (RED)
Red Warren, 74, of Hickory Grove, entered the Kingdom on June 28, 2013 after a courageous battle with brain cancer. He was surrounded in love of family and friends as he left to go to “Salkehatchie in the sky” and repair those mansions and pearly gates.
Red was an avid fisherman and spent many years on annual fishing trips to Canada and New York with “brother anglers” Bernie, Larry, Dave, Willie, James, Ben and Ken. He caught a trophy Muskie which currently is living in a man cave in Ohio, but will be coming south. He enjoyed the local ponds, where friends graciously allowed him to fish, here in the community.
Red and Sandy spent the last, and happiest, 16 years on their mini-farm in S.C. It was here, on Nanny and Pawpaw’s Funny Farm, where the loves of his life, the grandkids, were able to have their beloved goats, pot-bellied pigs, chickens and many other animals that they could talk their grandpa into. We never came home from an auction without something the kids got Grandpa to buy. They made memories that will be in their hearts forever.
Red loved his church, Mt. Vernon UMC, and his church family. He loved being in the choir and sang as long as he was physically able. He was involved in helping the church repair homes locally. He dearly loved going on the yearly Salkehatchie Youth Mission trip to rehab homes for those in need in Bishopville and Union SC. He and his Salkehatchie cohorts Beth, Bernie and Thomas helped many, many people and taught young people the gift of giving to others. Red loved and enjoyed the youth who worked with him.
Red was born March 30, 1939 in Boyle, MS, to Arley P. Warren Sr. and Ruthie Reynolds Warren (both deceased). He moved to Akron, OH as a teenager. It was there where he met and married his wife Sandy in 1964. In 1997 he and Sandy moved to Hickory Grove where they were welcomed by the church and community in spite of being “Yankees”. He and “Tub” peeled pounds of onions and helped at the Hash and Bar-B-Que for the Hickory Grove Fire and Rescue fundraisers.
Red worked as a steelmaker at the Atlantic Foundry in Akron for 25 years then for Case Western Reserve University Experimental Foundry for 9 years. He retired from U.S. Airways Express in 2001. There was nothing Red couldn’t fix or find a use for; building sheds barns, fences or “re-purposing” objects long before it became popular.
Red leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife of 49 years, Sandy (Harrell) Warren; children: beloved daughter Robin Antone (Mike), loving son Mike Warren (Dianne). Brothers: Talmadge Warren (Lois) and Robert Warren (Kat). Sister Carol Traicoff (Carl). He leaves his beloved grandchildren: Kayla Warren Evanson (Justin), Josh Warren, Chase, Logan, Hunter and Morgan Antone. His “brother/friend” Bernie Knafel and “sister/friend” Barb Knafel and lifelong friends Dave and Mary Melton, Larry and Shari Lawrence, Bill and Fran Reitz. In addition he leaves many nieces and nephews both related by blood and chosen as family. He was “Unky” to many and was famous for leaving footprints on ceilings when he “walked” the nieces and nephews upside down to the cries of “Do it again Unky”.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of life service will be held at Mt Vernon United Methodist Church in Hickory Grove on Saturday, July 6 at 1 pm with Rev. Larry Hyder and Rev. Linda Dunn officiating. Please wear CASUAL clothes as Red was always in jeans and would want y’all to be dressed as he would. Please bring a “Red” story or memory to share if you wish.
The family will receive friends at the church after the service.
We thank his Hospice team, Kristi, Frankie, Danette and others who have given such great care to Red and comfort to all of us. They are truly a blessing.
We also are grateful to Dr. Dan Haggstrom, Nurse Michelle, infusion nurse Mary Anne and the staff of Levine Cancer Institute for their wonderful care. Red always had a smile and teased them when we visited the office.
If anyone wishes, memorials may be made to Mt. Vernon Building Fund – PO Box 158, Hickory Grove, SC 29717, Salkehatchie Mission Fund (c/o Beth Ramsey at Mt Vernon- PO Box 158, Hickory Grove, SC 29717) or to Hospice and Community Care – PO Box 993, Rock Hill, SC 29731.
