Funeral service for Mr. Vernell Akins, 82 years old of DeKalb, TX who went to be with his Lord, February 5, 2021 at Christus St. Michael Health System, Texarkana, TX will be Saturday, February 13, 2021, at DeKalb Junior High Gym DeKalb, Texas @ 12:00 Noon with Rev. Kenneth Palmer, officiating and Rev. Kevin Haywood, eulogist. Condolences may be made at www.citizensfuneralhome.com.

Mr. Vernell Akins Sr. was born January 3, 1939 to the late Amos and Maggie Taylor Akins.

He received his education from Beaver Dam and Marvin Pynes High School and went on to Tyler Barber College. He graduated and moved to Oklahoma City and met and married Ann Wilson Akins. To this union three children. He was a trustee at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, DeKalb, Texas. Vernell retired from Bowie County Extension service; 22 years Cooperative Extension Program; Prairie View A&M University. Vernell loved to farm. He had cows and farm equipment that he daily attended for twenty plus years.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father; three brothers-Johnnie,
Joe Ray, and Booker T. Akins; six sisters-Marie Moore, Eva Mae Bagsby, Ruby Epperson, Verna Haywood, Versie Woods, and Essie Dockins

He leaves to cherish his memory
Wife: Sheridan A. Akins of DeKalb, TX
Children: Verna Parker, Vernell Akins Jr. (Nancy) of Clarksville, TX; Philander Akins (Tameka) of Oklahoma City, OK
Brother: Paul J. Akins (Sherry) of Oklahoma City, Ok
Sister: Annie Lee McCrary of Victorville CA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
