Thelma Godfrey

Funeral services for Mrs. Thelma C. Godfrey, of Dublin, will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, March 24, 2018, at the First African Baptist Church, 405 Telfair Street, Dublin. Reverend Rodney Turner will officiate. Interment will follow in the Dudley Memorial Cemetery.

Thelma Cummings was born on April 25, 1930, in Montrose, Georgia, to the late Helen Cummings Dupree and to the late Archie Stanley, Sr., as the eldest of ten children. She married the late Allen Godfrey, the love of her life, on March 29, 1947, in Dublin, Georgia. They were married for 37 years and became the proud parents of four children: Larry, Brenda, Linda, and Angela.

If one would describe Mrs. Godfrey’s work ethics, it would be that she was a hard worker who was dedicated and loyal. She was a beautician for many years working alongside her cousin, the late Lillian Brown. She later embarked upon her passion for cooking and became a food service worker at County Hospital and then a dietician supervisor at the Carl Vinson Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center. She retired from the VA Medical Center after 26 years of faithful service. After retirement, she catered part-time for several years for CHEP, a division of the VA Medical Center. Mrs. Godfrey was also a devoted patient sitter/caregiver for adults who needed constant care.

She enjoyed fishing but she loved baking and cooking; her kitchen was her favorite part of her home. She loved and nurtured her family; she reared her children and helped rear her grandchildren with patience, discipline, and humility. She was immersed in the Christian community which was her lifelong support from an early age. She was a faithful and active member of Christ Chapel Church.

Mrs. Thelma Cummings Godfrey returned to her heavenly home on March 19, 2018. Her devotion to her family and her firm belief in God supported her and ultimately gave her peace.

She was preceded in death by her parents, stepmom, Ethel Stanley, her husband; son, Larry Godfrey, daughter, Linda Jackson, grandson, Lamon Godfrey, granddaughter, Sharon Showers, great-granddaughter, Zundra Jackson, great, great grandson, Justin Robinson, brother, Jerry Stanley, sister, Byrdene Stanley-Gaines, and by devoted cousin, Lillian Brown.

Mrs. Godfrey was blessed with a large and loving family. She leaves to cherish her memories two daughters, Brenda Stanley and Angela (Willie) Blount, both of Dublin, three brothers, Carroll Dupree of Temple Hill, Maryland, Archie (Frankie) Stanley, Jr., and Leon Lamar, both of Atlanta, five sisters, Juanita Dupree-Richardson of Temple Hill, Maryland, Joan Stanley-Lee, Cora Stanley, Pamela Stanley, and Lanette Stanley (Rodney) Turner, all of Atlanta, one aunt, Dena Cummings of Washington, DC, 16 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, 19 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 101 Camelot Drive, Dublin, and the home of Angela (Willie) Blount, 1902 Hwy 441 North, Dublin. On Saturday, the funeral procession will leave from 101 Camelot Drive and Mrs. Godfrey will lie in state for viewing from 1-2 PM at the church.
