Roscoe Brower
Funeral services for Mr. Roscoe Brower, of Dublin, will be held at 12 PM on Wednesday, August 8, 2018, at the Henry Memorial Presbyterian Church, 511 Bellevue Avenue, Dublin. Reverend Dr. Ricky Porter will officiate. Interment will follow at 1 PM on Friday, August 10, at the Peaceful Rest Cemetery on North Pinetree Boulevard in Thomasville, Georgia.
Mr. Roscoe Brower, a native of Thomasville, was born on January 22, 1929, to the late Albert Brower and Lucille Hill-Brower. He was the eldest of seven children, Doris Smith, Estelle Gordon, Margaret Morris, Alberta Barnes, Nathaniel Brower, and Odis Brower. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Doris, Alberta, and Nathaniel.
Mr. Brower was a graduate of Douglass High School in Thomasville. He then matriculated on an athletic scholarship in football at Savannah State University and received his bachelor's degree in Industrial Arts Education with a minor in Athletics in 1953. Upon graduation, he moved to Dublin and became the Industrial Arts education teacher at the newly constructed Oconee High School. During his time there, he served as a track coach and football coach.
After arriving in Dublin, Mr. Brower immediately became involved in community affairs as well as becoming a charter member of Washington Street Presbyterian Church in 1953 where he eventually served as an active Elder, Worship Committee Chairperson, and choir member.
Upon the closing of Oconee High School, Mr. Brower became the Industrial Arts teacher at Dublin Junior High School and he served as the Vocational Education Chairman for the Dublin City School System for ten years. He also officiated basketball games with Georgia High School Association for over twenty years. After retirement in 1989, he became a full-time employee with the Dublin-Laurens County Parks and Recreation Department, serving as the Director of the Oconee Community Center where his dedication to positively impact the lives of children and young people will be felt for generations.
Mr. Brower proudly represented his constituents as Laurens County Commissioner of District 1 for twenty-five years. He was a member of numerous organizations including as Life Member of Savannah State University Alumni, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, Leadership Dublin- Laurens, Rotary Club, Optimist Club, Life Member of NAACP, Rural Development Commission, Heart of Georgia Community Action Agency Council, Retired Teachers Association, Black Festival Committee, and the National Association of County Officials.
Mr. Brower leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Gloria Diane Brower; son, Eric Brower; daughter, Sybil K. (Leroy) Pooler; granddaughter, Zoree C. Pooler; step-children, James E. (Anna) Jones and Christopher (Astrid) Jones; five step-grandchildren; sisters, Estelle Gordon and Margaret Morris; brother, Odis J. Brower; and his mother-in-law, Cleo Sullivan, and many aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws whom he loved dearly.
Thank you to family and friends who came to visit from far and near to keep him company during his illness. A special thanks to Curtis Smith for always being there for him; Randy Floyd for helping and caring; caregivers, Tammie Blue and LaTidha Wallace for helping to brighten his days and taking care of him.
