Funeral services for Mr. Otha James “Mooney” Davis, Jr., of Dublin, Georgia, will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, October 28, 2017, at The First African Baptist Church, 405 Telfair Street in Dublin. Reverend Carlos Jones will deliver the eulogy. Interment will follow in the Dudley Memorial Cemetery.
Minister Otha James Davis, Jr., was born on February 29, 1952, to Louisiana Davis and the late Deacon Otha James Davis, Sr. He was the oldest of four children including the late Carol Davis. He was a 1970 graduate of Oconee High School where he was on the homecoming court and was a captain of the football team. After high school, he joined the United States Navy and served from 1971-1993. While enlisted in the Navy as a cook,he defied all odds to rise to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer-3 (CW03); from which he retired. He has been stationed in Japan, Egypt, Bermuda, San Diego and Jacksonville, Florida, and was also active during the Operation of Desert Storm. He holds a bachelors degree in education studies from Southern Illinois University. Mr. Davis became a minister in the year of 2001, and gave his first sermon that same year at Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church in Texas City, Texas.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Louisiana Davis, Dublin; three beautiful children, Otha James Davis III, Khary Jamal Davis and Breyana Denise Davis, by his former wife, Denise Davis; two sisters, Cynthia Ann (Raymond) Dickey of Roberta, and Peggy D. (Gary) Johnson of Dublin; aunts, Mary (Charles) Mathis of Milledgeville, and Reva Davis of Dublin; uncles, Nathaniel (Mary) Howard of Dublin, William Howard of Lowell, Florida, and Charlie (Annie B) Howard of Milledgeville; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family is receiving friends at 510 Geffcken Street in Dublin.
