Maya Angelou
Maya Angelou, famous author, poet and actress passed away on the morning of May 28th, 2014. She was found by her nurse. Maya had not been feeling well and had canceled some recent scheduled appearances because of health problems.
Maya was an amazing woman with many talents. Not only was she a famous writer, she had traveled the world with her dancing and singing. She was a strong advocate for equal rights and was highly respected by everyone. She was a spokesperson of black people and women everywhere. She was once quoted as saying, “You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.” Her official webpage called her “A Warrior for Equality”.
Maya’s birth name was Marqueite Annie Johnson. Her older brother gave her the nickname “Maya” from “Mya sister” which stuck throughout her life. Maya was raised during the great depression and was active in the Civil Rights movement. In 2001 she was named one of the 30 most powerful women in America.
Maya wrote many books, mostly themed on family and racism. Her best known book was in 1969, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”; A story of her own life during her growing up years. It brought International recognition!
Maya was clever, intelligent and witty in her writings. As she once said, “I make writing as much a part on my life as I do eating or listening to music… “I also wear a hat or a very tightly pulled head tie when I write. I suppose I hope by doing that I will keep my brains from seeping out of my scalp and running in great gray blobs down my neck, into my ears, and over my face.”
Her demonstration of bravery and determination is an example to all of us. Posted on her Facebook is, “I believe that each of us comes from the creator trailing wisps of glory.”
