Funeral services for Mrs. Lula Lewis, age 101, of East Dublin, will be held on Wednesday, March 4, 2015, at 11 AM at the Williams Chapel Baptist Church, 1142 Georgia Highway 29, East Dublin. Reverend James F. Sherman will officiate. Burial will follow in the Dudley Memorial Cemetery.
Do Lawd, Do Lawd, Lawd Remember Me. Do Lawd, Do Lawd, Lawd Remember Me. And truly the Lord did just that on Thursday, February 26, 2015. Mrs. Lula Lewis softly transitioned from labor to reward.
Mrs. Lewis was born on March 11, 1913, to Watson & Linnie Bell in Washington County, Georgia, on the Braid Plantation. She received her early childhood education at Williams Chapel School. She also attended and joined the Williams Chapel Baptist Church and was a faithful member until her health declined. Mrs. Lewis was an avid lover of fishing, gardening, farming, cooking and spending time with family. She was a firm believer of giving as well as receiving respect. She was a dedicated domestic worker for over 30 years. In obedience to her mother, the well-respected, Mrs. Linnie “Ma” Spikes, she and her sister, the late Mrs. Georgia Mae Duffie, purchased land and had homes built. The current structures are still used as home houses and have been for over 68 years. Mrs. Lewis was a well-loved citizen of East Dublin and surrounding communities.
Mrs. Lewis was united in marriage to the late Mr. Charlie Daniel and to this union one child was born, her eldest daughter, the late Mrs. Evelyn Daniel Outler. Mrs. Lewis was later united in marriage to the late Mr. Isaiah “Coot” Lewis and to this union four children were born.
Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by daughters: Mrs. Evelyn Outler and Mrs. Mildred Jones; son: Mr. John C. Mincey; daughter-in-law: Mrs. Louise Mincey; siblings: Mrs. Georgia Duffie, Mrs. Marie Bonner, Mrs. Zenola Clemons, Mrs. Essie Mae Patterson, Mrs. Mary L. Fowler, Mr. Cuba Spikes, Mr. Horace Spikes and twins, Daniel & Dee Spikes. Mrs. Lula was the last surviving sibling and was blessed and highly favored to live 101 years, 11 months and 13 days.
She leaves to cherish her memories three daughters: Mrs. Rita Mae McClendon of Miami, Florida, Mrs. Lena (Ulyssess) Rhyne of Dublin and Mrs. Annie Ruth Plummer, who was also her devoted caregiver, of East Dublin; one son-in-law: Mr. Oscar Jones of Dublin; sister-in-laws: Mrs. Ethel Spikes of Dublin, and Mrs. Sylvia Spikes of New York; brother-in-law: Mr. J. W. Harris of Ohio; forty grandchildren, including two devoted: Mrs. Monique Lewis Billups and Mr. Anthony Jones, Sr.; ninety great grandchildren, forty-five great-great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. She as blessed to witness a 5th generation…And again, the Lord remembered her.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Annie Plummer, 402 Jordan Street, East Dublin.
