Funeral services for Mrs. Lena Bell “Sweet” James Mathis, 83, of Dublin, will be held on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at 11 AM in the C. D. Dudley Memorial Chapel at the Dudley Funeral Home. Apostle Shirley Parker of the Free Vision Church of Dublin will officiate.

Mrs. Mathis, better and affectionately known as "Auntie" and "Sweet" to family and friends was born July 1, 1933, in Johnson County, Georgia as one of eight children. Mrs. Mathis was a humble, non-complaining, soul in the universe. Having grown up on the farm, the country-side was her friend and what she knew best. She raised chickens and guinea hens, and, off and on, pigs and hogs. She was one who loved walking, both for mobility and for pleasure. Although she was a quiet neighbor, she lived, loved and knew God, the Father. She passed away on Thursday, August 4, 2016. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank James and Carrie Bell Temple James; her husband, the late Hubert R. Mathis, Sr.; six siblings, Bennie Frank James, Willie Arthur James, A. W. James, Hershel James, Varlonus James and Louise Mincey.

Survivors include her sons, Willie Larry (Elverleen) James and Hubert Rupert Mathis, both of Dublin; one sister: Beatrice James of Dublin; five grandchildren: Crystal (Dontavious) Bembry of Irwinton; Terry James, Kenyetta Porter, Leah Carswell and Joshua Mathis, all of Dublin; four sisters-in-law: Emma Lois James and Dorothy Linder James, both of East Dublin; Hattie James, Gary, Indiana; and Lois Mathis Archibald of Cordele; three nieces-in-law: Maria O. Archibald, of Atlanta; Frenchy J. Hodges of Dublin; and Marva H. (Arthur) Walker of Jacksonville, Florida; one nephew-in-law, Kenneth Larry (Margaret) Hodges; a special niece and a special grand niece-in-law: “Sue” Mincey and Angela Brazeal; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and loved ones. She will be greatly missed by all.

The family will receive friends at the home of Angela Brazeal, 1266 Thundering Springs Road, East Dublin.
