Funeral services for Mrs. Laura “Mae” Nesbitt Franklin, 69, of Dublin, will be held at 2 PM on Sunday, March 6, 2016, at the Greater New Friendship Baptist Church, 3265 Georgia Highway 19 South, Dublin. Reverend Roger Edwards will preside, and Bishop A. Timothy Chatman will deliver the eulogy.

Mrs. Franklin, who passed away on February 29, 2016, was born on September 30, 1946, in Dublin, to the late Ira and Laura Nesbitt. At an early age she joined Mt. Cilla Springs Baptist Church in Danville, Georgia. She graduated from Calhoun Consolidated High School in 1963, and earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Bethune-Cookman University in 1967. She later earned a Master’s Degree from Nova University in Miami, Florida. Mrs. Franklin began her teaching career in Wilkinson County in 1967.

She was a teacher in the Miami-Dade County School System for 34 years where she was selected three times as teacher of the year. After retirement in 2001, the Franklins moved back to Dublin and joined the Greater New Friendship Baptist Church.

She was a member of the Dublin-Laurens County Retired Teachers Association, Georgia Retired Teachers Association and the Dublin-Laurens County Chapter of the NAACP, and a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David Franklin. She is survived by her children, Charlie “Chuck” Johnson, Jr. Miami, Florida, and Crystal Lewaner Johnson, Pooler; granddaughter, Akassja White, Miami, Florida; sisters, Susie Iraleen (Roger) Smith, Toomsboro, Cora Ann (Thomas “Ted”) Pooler, Rentz; nephews & nieces, Vincent Smith, Cynthia Smith, Derrick (Stacy) Smith, Marlon (Shelley) Pooler and Carla (Tomaqua) Smith; great-nieces & great-nephews, Bria Smith, Jarius Chatman, Zoria Chatman, Madisyn Pooler and Morgan Pooler; aunts & uncles, Gertrude Adams, Atlanta, Mamie Thomas, Elmira, NY, Virginia Nesbitt, Dublin, Roy (Mary) Nesbitt, Stone Mountain, Barbara Nesbitt, Perry, Rufus (Donna) Nesbitt, Jackson, Louisiana, Calvin Nesbitt, Danville; brother-in-laws & sister-in-laws, James (Rodline) Franklin, Miami, Florida, Jerome (Charrise) Franklin, Palm Coast, Florida, Robert (Belma) Franklin, Margaret Franklin, Betty (George) Williams, Annette (Chris) Jones, Arnenia (Butler) Sharpton, all of Vidalia; and a host of cousins and friends.

The family will receive friends at 223 Waverly Drive, Dublin, and on Saturday, 6-7 PM, at the Dudley Funeral Home.
