Sharon – James F. “Dick” Martin, Jr., 94, passed away on Monday, December 11, 2017 at his home in Sharon.
The funeral will be held at 2 PM on Friday, December 15, 2017 at Sharon United Methodist Church with Rev. Donald Love and Dr. Lewis Bozard officiating. Burial will follow at Sharon A.R.P. Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 14, 2017 from 6 – 8 PM at Bratton Funeral Home in York.
Jim was born August 9, 1923, the son of James F. Martin Sr. and Mary Belle Ramsey Martin. He graduated from Sharon High School in 1940.
Jim entered the military in February 1943 during World War II. He served with the US Army Air Force, 7th Bomb Group, 10th Air Force in China, Burma and India as Base Security Officer. Jim served from 1943 to 1945 and received the following decorations and citations: the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, the WWII Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Unit Presidential Citation, and Marksman ranking for pistol, rifle, sub machine gun and shotgun.
Jim graduated from Coyne Electrical Radio – TV School in Chicago, IL in 1952. He worked for Motorola Inc for 34 years spending 17 of those years in Chicago and 17 in Scottsdale, AZ. He retired from the Aerospace Division of Motorola in 1986 and returned to Sharon, SC.
Jim is survived by niece, Barbara White Ludington (husband David) of Farmland, IN and two nephews; James Harvey White (wife Joanna) of Atlanta, GA and Jay Stuart Gourley of Sharon. Other survivors are two sister in laws; Virginia Harris of Sharon, and Bonnie Lattimore of Spartanburg. Many thanks to Dillard and Helen Maloney of Sharon for all the help and good food they provided over the years, and to the caretakers from ABC.
Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Pauline Stephenson Martin, three sisters, Lilly F. Martin White (husband Harvey), Mary Virginia Martin Gourley (Husband Herman), and Josie Saye Martin Grizzard (husband Winston, Sr.), two nephews; Malon Winston Grizzard, Jr., and Bill Martin Grizzard, and niece Nancy Grizzard.
