MCCONNELLS -- Hugh John Harshaw, Jr., 79, of 320 Simpson Road passed away Sunday, August 9, 2015, at his home in McConnells.
The funeral will be at 3:00 P.M. on Thursday, August 13, 2015 at Olivet Presbyterian Church with Rev. Chip McArthur and Rev. Barry Lambert officiating. Burial will be at Olivet Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 from 5-8 PM at Olivet Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall.
A native of McConnells, John was a son of the late Hugh John Harshaw, Sr. and Ruth "Dolly" Hardee Harshaw. He was a lifetime member of Olivet Presbyterian Church in McConnells where he was an Elder Emeritus. He also served in the United States Navy. John was the mayor of McConnells having first been elected in 1994, after serving on the town council for several years. He was twice named the Jaycee's Farmer of the Year in 1970 and 1971. He was on the Board of Directors for Farm Bureau, and served on the Zoning and Planning Commission, and he also served on the 2010 Forecast Committee for York County. John was a member of the McConnells Volunteer Fire Department for 58 years, and also started the first Boy Scout Troop #160 in McConnells.
He is survived by wife Peggy Carroll Harshaw of McConnells, SC, daughters, Carol Harshaw Comer (Jackie) of Sharon, SC, Deborah Harshaw (Dale) of Clover, SC, Hugh John Harshaw III (Felicia) of McConnells, SC, brother, James E. Harshaw (Rachel) of Chapel Hill, NC, sister Linda Harshaw Metzger (Roy) of Bessemer City, NC, brother, Malcolm Harshaw (Susan) of McConnells, six grandchildren, Amanda Frock, Audrey Blanks, J.C. Comer, Danielle Reeves, Hugh John Harshaw IV, and Justin Allen Harshaw, and eight great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Harshaw was preceded in death by sister Ann Harshaw Greenough.
