Memorial services for Mr. Henry Lee "Joe" Pooler, of Dublin, will be held at 11 AM on Monday, March 14, 2016, at the Second African Baptist Church, 800 North Decatur Street, Dublin. Minister Bo Boston will officiate. Interment will follow in the Dudley Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Pooler, who passed away on March 8, 2016, was born on December 15, 1945, in Laurens County, to the late Thomas William Pooler and the late Alpha Lee Brady.

In 1963, Mr. Pooler graduated from Oconee High School as an Trojan, he played basketball, participated in the Hi Y Club, and other various activities. He is remembered by many of his classmates as quiet and reserved, a gentle spirit and a smile.

He attended Albany Technical College and later he received an associates degree. As a life long learner, he always stressed the importance of education to his children and others that he mentored.

He served in the United States Army from 1965 to 1967 as a radio operator. He received the National Defense Medal as a sharp shooter and achieved certifications in medical and surgical nursing. In April 1967, he was honorable discharged from the Army. As a veteran, he maintained concern and compassion for fellow veterans and the defense of our country.

On May 5, 1968, Mr. Pooler married his high school sweetheart, the late Hazel Meardith Pooler. They became the proud parents of three beautiful daughters, Pamela, Anika and Meardith. As parents they taught and nurtured their children by Christian teachings and standards.

He was a federal employee for more than thirty years. He worked at the Carl Vinson Veterans Administration Medical Center, and at the Social Security Administration, later retiring from the Carl Vinson Veterans Medical Center in 1995. As an employee, he maintained strong work ethics and dedication to giving back to his community.

His dedication and commitment to community service includes involvement in the NAACP, the Black Festival Committee, and Youth Recreational Activities. He also was a political activist and mentor for many community male youth. He was very passionate for education the next generation in black history and coordinated two programs highlighting the celebration of "Juneteenth" utilizing local youth.

Mr. Pooler's hobbies included bowling, enjoying his music, playing cards, checkers, gardening, bird watching, reading, and spending time with his family and friends.

As a man of faith, he had a personal relationship with the Lord. He enjoyed reading and studying the word of God. Friends remember his as being a faithful member and teacher of Sunday School at Driskell Tabernacle Church in his early years. He also attended Second African Baptist Church with his family and grew in his faith and trusted God throughout his life and his time of transition. He was also a member of the Oconee High School Alumni Association.

Mr. Pooler was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel, of thirty-five years. He leaves behind three daughters, Pamela (Robert) Bettis of Alpharetta, Anika K. Pooler-Thompson of McDonough and Meardith Pooler of Tallahassee, Florida. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kionna, Forrester, Marquiss, Mikala & Micah. Other survivors include his sisters, Retha Mae (Edward) Pittman of Lake Wales, Faye Boston, Dublin and one step-sister, Addie Edwards, Dublin; brothers include, Thomas "Ted" (Cora) of Rentz, Eclemus (Betsy) Brown - Pooler, Dublin and one stepbrother, Charles (Lois) Myricks, Miami, Florida. He is also survived by numerous sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews others and dear friends.

The family will receive friends at the Dudley Funeral Home on Sunday, March 13, from 5-6 pm.
