George Thompson

George Franklin Thompson, passed away on Friday morning, September 9, 2011, at home in Wenatchee, with his family by his side. He was born on April 13, 1938 in Costa Mesa, California to the late George Ellwood and Beatrice (Grant) Thompson. He graduated from Newport Harbor High School where he excelled in all sports, lettering in football, baseball, track and basketball in his freshman year. He continued playing sports and attended Orange Coast College at Costa Mesa on a Baseball Scholarship where he earned his Associates degree. In 1960, he entered the National Guard and served in the reserves while furthering his studies at San Jose State and Long Beach State Colleges. In 1962, he entered the banking business with U S Bank of San Diego. George married Terry McDonald in 1962 and they had two children. He continued his career in banking, moving the family to Washington State. In 1977 he completed studies with Pacific Coast Banking School through the University of Washington. He was married to Sally Davis-Campbell in September of 1994 and they made their home in Wenatchee. In 1999 he retired from Key Bank as Vice President - Small Business Trans-Mountain District with his office based in Wenatchee. George was an active member in the community. He shared his love of sports with his children coaching youth soccer for many years and encouraging them to participate in sports. He also served on the YMCA board for 10 years. In retirement, George picked up golfing again and spent many hours at the Wenatchee Golf and Country Club. He used his business skills as a volunteer counselor for small business owners in participation with S.C.O.R.E. and became a consultant for the Farm Family Support Network through the Washington State University cooperative extension. George loved to garden spending hours working in his yard. Travel was another of Georges favorite things. George is survived by his wife, Sally, at the home daughter, Charnna (Darren) Gilmore, Etna, CA son, Scott (Kelly) Thompson, Wenatchee step-sons Bryan (Nicole) Campbell, Goldendale, WA and Aaron (Stacy) Campbell, Spokane. WA. George is also survived by four grandchildren, Cassidy and Coy Gilmore of Etna, CA and Nicholas and Nathan Campbell of Spokane, his sister, Erma Prinslow, San Luis Obispo, CA. and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Beverly Sankey and his stepfather, Paul Bell Cassidy. A memorial service will be held on Monday, September 19th at 1:00 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 1408 Washington Street in Wenatchee, with the Reverend Jon Nelson officiating. Friends, who wish, may make memorial gifts in his name to the Grace Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or the Wenatchee Valley Humane Society.
