Our Silverton facility, located on 229 Mill Street, was built and established in 1919 by Ernest Ekman. Mr. Ekman moved to Silverton in 1912 and had previously worked for Jack Funeral Home, which was located on Water Street here in Silverton. After working for a time for Larsen Funeral Home, Ernie Ekman took control of the then funeral home as Mr. Larson traveled abroad to Europe. During that time in which Mr. Larson was abroad, Ernie Ekman built our funeral home in 1915, which later became Ekman Funeral Home. Our current home became Ekman Unger Funeral Home in 1957 and later Unger Funeral Chapel in 1960, under the ownership of Tom Unger.

On Sept. 1, 1977, our funeral home came under the ownership of Paul and Laura Lorentzen. Paul was a graduate of the San Francisco School of Mortuary in 1935, and was a pioneer of his time, strongly rooted in operating a family funeral home. With family values in mind, he kept the Unger family name and operation as it continues today. Our original building remains the same, with slight modifications which have occurred over the years to expand our facility.

Unger Funeral Chapel continues to remain family owned and operated, and is one of 4 family facilities throughout the west coast today. We are proud to provide personalized and specific assistance to each and every family. We are reasonable and understanding of each person and their individual needs, by having flexibility with payment and options. We currently have 2 full-time funeral directors and 2 part-time office staff members, and have added an apprentice to our staff most recently. We also include a staff of over 10 additional people to assist with duties which may take place during nights, evenings and weekends. We are committed to being available 24 hours a day with the help of our wonderful staff.

Our Mt. Angel facility was started by E d Unger, who began the first and only funeral home in Mt. Angel, Oregon, in 1924. It originally was located on the corner of Garfield and College Streets. The present location, at 190 Railroad Avenue, was the former home of Dr. Webb, and was established in 1946.

Several years back, a fire took place at this location. After this, the funeral home was rebuilt in 2005 and remains as it stands today. Our facility can seat up to 70 people and has handicap accessibility.

We invite you to visit either location to learn more about our history, practices and to inform you of anything you may wish to learn about us! Thank you for reading about us.

Understanding Funeral Prices at Unger Funeral Chapel
Your Consumer Rights and Available Information

Arranging a funeral can be both emotionally challenging and financially burdensome. Many people have little knowledge about the funeral industry, and in such difficult times, they may be vulnerable to being deceived or taken advantage of.

To protect consumers, Unger Funeral Chapel is obligated to follow the guidelines outlined in the "Funeral Rule". Failure to comply with this rule could result in complaints being filed against the funeral home by the Federal Trade Commission.

The "Funeral Rule" was established in 1984 to ensure that all funeral homes, including Unger Funeral Chapel, provide customers with clear and accurate information about the products and services they offer. This includes providing price details over the phone upon request.

As part of the "Funeral Rule," Unger Funeral Chapel is required to offer a General Price List (GPL) to anyone who asks for it. This list includes various expenses related to funeral services, such as transportation to the cemetery in or around Marion County, as well as costs for viewing or visitation services.

Anyone who visits Unger Funeral Chapel at 190 Railroad Avenue in Mount Angel, OR and asks about funeral arrangements is entitled to receive a free copy of the general price list. This applies to all individuals, regardless of whether they intend to purchase funeral services or not.
