Eulah (chapman) Ellison
Eulah Bell Chapman, the youngest of eight children born to Henry Chapman and Lilly Chapman (Stokes), on June 9, 1927 in Pitt County, Winterville, North Carolina.
Eulah was under a physician’s care and departed this life on Wednesday, June 22, 2011.
She accepted Christ at a young age at Popular Hill Church and was baptized in the local creek. Eulah received her early education in the Ayden Public School system. She received her license in 1945 and started driving the school bus. In 1951, she graduated from the DeShazor Beauty School and received her beautician license.
She met and married the late Booker T. Whitehurst. From this union came Lowell (deceased), Wendell Donald, Eulah T. (Darlene) and Thaddeus (deceased). The marriage ended in divorce.
Eulah Bell accomplished many things in her life. She was among the first group of female Yellow Cab drivers (Cab #542). This was a man’s world, but she held her own.
She worshipped at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, under the founder, Rev. Henry Morris. After his death, she began to fellowship with Life Auditorium, under the late Rev. Luther J. Carroll. She was a founder of the choir, Voices of Life and served on the Usher Board. It was during this time that she began to act upon the teachings of the Rev. Schambach Ministries, and started to trust God and step out on faith. This resulted in her owning “Bell’s Confectionery”. A corner store that she ran with the assistance of her nephew, William Chapman (Bud). She also took the trip of a lifetime to Russia, Germany, Sweden, Norway & Holland.
After retiring from London Fog Mfg. Co., she met up with her childhood sweetheart, Harvey Ellison (deceased), which she married and moved back to North Carolina in 1987. She joined Phillipi Church of Christ and was involved with the Mother Board and Mission Ministries.
Eulah returned to Baltimore in 2010 and lived in Woodbourne Woods, a senior housing complex. At first, she was somewhat shy, but she eventually found her niche in the weekly bible study classes. As long as she could learn and talk about the goodness of the Lord, she was just fine.
She joined the Maranatha Baptist Church, under Pastor Theodore Jones and would also attend services at New Joy Church and Ministries, under the Rev. Kevin English.
Eulah was grounded in her faith of Jesus Christ. She loved the Lord and had a true desire to live a life that was pleasing to Him. Her prayer was to see all of her family accept Jesus Christ as their Savior and to glorify His name.
She leaves to cherish her memories, one son, Wendell Donald (Joyce) Whitehurst; one daughter, Eulah T. (Robert) Tooles; one daughter-in law, Sandra Whitehurst; a God-daughter, Thelma Harvey; nephew (who was more like a brother) William Henry Chapman; grandsons, Landis (Sharon), Mark (Quiana), Sherrod Whitehurst; granddaughters, Tisa Brown, Kesha Whitehurst and Mica Ransom; great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law; brother-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.
