YORK – Emma Towery Newton Smith, 89, of 2995 Handsmill Hwy, died Thursday, November 8, 2012 at home. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 PM Saturday, November 10, 2012 at Bratton Funeral Home in York. The funeral will be at 2 PM, Sunday, November 11, 2012 at Allison Creek Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Sam McGregor and Rev. Phil Coe officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Born in Cleveland County in 1923, Emma was the daughter of the late Samuel and Bessie Towery. She moved to York with her husband Forrest Newton in 1943. She was a member of Allison Creek Presbyterian Church for 69 years. Emma was a loving and devoted mother and wife who adopted her son, Ronnie in 1956 and her daughter Cathy in 1960. She worked at Rock Hill Printing and Finishing, Huntley’s, MFB, and Woodlands, where she made numerous friends over many years. In 1987, after the death of her lifelong sweetheart, Forrest Newton, she was blessed to find love again when she married James Parks Smith. Emma loved her family and loved visiting and spending time with them. Her family takes comfort in knowing that she is in heaven now. Emma is survived by her son Ronnie Newton (Susan) of Kings Mountain, NC, her daughter Cathy Fox (Larry) of York, SC; sisters, Vass McNeilly (Durham) of York, SC, and Zelma Houser of Vale, NC; brothers, Herbert Towery (Juanita) of York, SC and Sam “SF” Towery (Ivey) of Rock Hill, SC; six grandchildren, Stephanie Newton Johnson (Caleb), Jona Gebhart, Jessica McWhorter (Chris), Heather Fox Burleson (Johnny Ray), Bud Fox (Tiffany), Sabrina Hart (Randy Winters); and ten great grandchildren, Jeremy Knopp, Treven Gebhart, Kaleb McWhorter, Emma Leigh McWhorter, Alex Stacy, Sierra Stacy, Destiny Hart, Devon Burleson, Preston Burleson, and Caiden Burleson.
