Funeral services for Mrs. Dovie L. McCormick, of Dublin, will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at the Driskell Tabernacle Baptist Church, 223 Martin Luther King, Jr., Drive in Dublin. Reverend Anthony Q. Corbett, Sr., will deliver the eulogy. Interment will follow in the Moore Station Cemetery.
Mrs. McCormick was born on August 12, 1932, in Dublin to the late Rafford and Irene Johnson. She attended Dublin schools and became a member of Mount Moriah Baptist Church at an early age. Later, she married John Stanley and they had one son in 1948. She then moved to Chicago, Ilinois, where she joined the Greater Union Baptist Church and worked for the United States Postal Service for a number of years. She was featured in Jet Magazine as one of Chicago’s first female mail carriers in the 1960s. Later she married Sgt. Amos McCormick and did extensive travelling in Alaska, Florida, and Germany. Returning to Dublin in 1977, she worked at the Division of Family and Children Services until her retirement in 1998. She joined the Driskell Tabernacle Baptist Church and remained faithful for many years until she joined the Lundy Chapel Baptist Church under Reverend Corbett. She departed this life on Thursday, April 20, 2017.
Mrs. McCormick was preceded in death by twenty-five siblings, including Willie Mae White and Queen Washington of Dublin, and by her aforementioned husbands.
She is survived by one son, John D. (Ikuko) Stanley of Warner Robins; six grandchildren, Chanda (Stacey) Lowery, Staff Sgt. John (Jessica) Stanley, Dovie Stanley, Samuel Stanley, Robert Stanley, David Stanley; five great-grand children, Zion, Namie, David Jr, Novah, Khree; one niece, Annie Akridge of Indianapolis, Indiana; a godson, Earl (Dornetta) May of Dublin; three goddaughters, Vanessa (George)Tobridge, Betty Denson, and Betty Stanley of Dublin; special niece, Hortense (Thomas) Ray of Dublin; two nephews, Saul (Mel) McNeil of Tampa, Florida, and Robert Johnson of Ocala, Florida; great nieces, Jessica and Lee-Lee; great nephew, Charles; two faithful friends, Mary Williams and Dorothy Wilson; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
