Dave Hightower
Funeral services for Mr. Dave Hightower, Jr., of Wrightsville. will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2014, at 12 PM at the Lovett Grove Community Baptist Church, 1359 Idylwild Road in Wrightsville.
On November 28, 2014, Mr. Hightower, 89, departed this life. He was born on September 20, 1925, in Wrightsville to the late Mr. Dave Hightower Sr. and Mrs. Martha Johnson Hightower. He was the second of three sons. His elder brother, Johnnie B. (Lucile) Wright of Bridgeton, New Jersey, preceded him in death.
Mr. Hightower lived his entire life in and around Wrightsville GA. He was a member of Rock Spring Baptist Church. He attended Tucker Grove School. Throughout his life, he had various occupations. His occupations included being a Farmer, a Factory worker, a Security guard a Police officer and Entrepreneur. In 1968, he became the first african american police officer for the City of Wrightsville. As a factory worker, he worked as a Production Supervisor at Bellview Industries for many years. He also worked as a Maintenance technician for the Johnson County Board of Education, and eventually retired in 1993. He frequently stated, “Hard work ain’t never hurt nobody.” Dave was an avid baseball fan. He organized, managed, and coached recreational baseball in Johnson County during the 1960s and 1970s. He went on to manage the first interracial city league baseball team in Wrightsville. This recreational league was enjoyed by many in the community.
Mr. Hightower's survivors include his children, David Hightower (Eloise) of Wrightsville; Geraldine Hightower Moye (Ben) of Wrightsville; Wilhelmina Hightower Coneway of East Dublin; Rosa Hightower (Larry) Darrisaw of Wrightsville; Dorothy J. Hightower of Springfield, Massachusetts; Janice Hightower Shanklin of Marietta, Brinson S. Hightower of Macon, John Edward Hightower of Wrightsville, Eva Hightower Chapman of East Dublin; Linda Davis and Diana Davis of Atlanta; Larry (Veronica) Davis and Ray Davis of Fort Pierce, Florida, Prince (Sharon) Davis of New Haven, Connecticut, Wendell (Joyce) Scott of Dublin; Janice Mitchell of Philadephia, Pennsylvania, and two stepsons, John Norris and Sheldon (Evelyn) Norris of Wrightsville, a brother, Henry Lee (Jessie) Hosley, Jr., of Jesup, and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends at 1006 Hightower Road in Wrightsville.
