Barbara Ann Dixon
Funeral services for Mrs. Barbara Ann "Hankins" Dixon, of Dublin, Georgia, will be held on Tuesday, August 4, 2020, at 10 AM at the graveside in the Dudley Memorial Cemetery in Dublin. Reverend Ellis Carswell will deliver the eulogy.
Mrs. Dixon was born on July 7, 1950 to the late Henry Pearson and Lillian (Willie) Hankins Odums in Dublin.
After her mother moved up north to find a better job opportunity, Barbara was reared by her grandmother, Lola Shivers Hankins. She attended Fleming Chapel AME Church for several years as a young child and teenager. In her young adult and adult years, she was a faithful and dedicated member of First African Baptist Church in Dublin. She was currently a faithful and dedicated member of The Central Baptist Church in Dublin.
Barbara graduated from the historic Oconee High School, Oconee Technical College and DeVry University. Barbara has enjoyed diverse and multi-faceted careers both in the private and public sector. Her professional journey included a tour with the Georgia Department of Labor in Human Resources and Herman J. Russell Enterprises in Property Management. In addition, she has served as the Child Care Director with the First African Baptist Church of Dublin and has operated a Personal Day Care Home.
Wholeheartedly committed to her community, Barbara volunteers her time with various organizations and groups. A dedicated member of the Oconee High School National Alumni Association Barbara has been involved with preserving the best interests and traditions of Oconee High, Dublin’s high school for educating Black youths during segregation. She served as recording secretary for 8 years, Vice President for 2 years and currently serves as Treasure. A founding member of the Dublin-Laurens County Black History Festival Community Committee, she was instrumental in planning a facilitating the month-long Black History celebration and articulating and compelling vision of why Black History matters. She served in many capacities including secretary and Awards committee chairperson. Barbara understood the importance of community outreach, as is evident in her involvement in the Southside Community Association, Inc. She was an active and dedicated member of Central Baptist Church Missionary Department, and S.A.L.T Ministries. She was active in the General Missionary Baptist Convention. She served many years as secretary for Rehoboth, the Northern Region and the 12th District. Barbara is the recipient of the 1988 Women of The Year-Dublin-Laurens Black Festival Inc., Georgia Child Professional of the Year-Georgia Child Care Council, President's Award-OHSNAA, INC, and the Leontine F. Espy Award of Excellence-Middle Georgia Fisk Alumni Association.
She passed away on July 30, 2020. She was preceded in death by her grandmother Lola Shivers Hankins, parents Lillian (Hankins) and Willie Odums, and seven of her uncles and aunts.
She leaves to cherish her memory a son, Otis James (Lisette) Dixon Jr. of Wendell NC, and a daughter, Marlena R. Dixon of Dublin; two brothers, Gregory (Rhonda) Odums of Clarksville TN, and Eric J. (India) Odums; one sister, Cynthia Odums of Detroit MI; seven grandchildren, Kevin Bonneau, Ulysses Bonneau, Akila Dixon, Jazmin Dixon, Juwan Dixon, Brandon Bonneau, and Riley Bonneau; two nieces, Jermina Odums and Aquanette Odums of Clarksville; and two great nieces.
