Jack Spradlin
YORK -- Arelious Jackson Spradlin, 87 passed away October 9, 2014 at peace surrounded by family, friends and the loving staff of the Vista Building at Agape Senior in York, SC.
Jack was born January 15, 1926 in West Point, GA. He was the son of Walter Leon and Ginny Harp Spradlin, and later his stepmother, Thelma Morton Spradlin. His first wife, Betty Jean Carpenter Spradlin and his brother Walter Thomas Spradlin predeceased him.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Branyon Spradlin, two sons, Richard Leon Spradlin (Susan) of Myrtle Beach and Kelvin Scott Spradlin of York, a sister, Obreda Spradlin Dunn of West Point, GA, six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Jack volunteered to serve in the US Navy at age 16 and served his country in WWII and the Korean Conflict, first aboard the USS Porterfield in the Pacific campaign of WWII and then the USS Opportune during Korea. He made many life long friends during his navy service and was very active in the Balch/Porterfield Reunion Association.
He married Betty at Central Baptist Church, November 16, 1947 and relocated to her hometown of York, SC, a city he loved. Jack’s employment spanned two careers, Cannon Mills and York Place, The Episcopal Church Home for Children, a place always dear to him. Jack was a faithful member of Central Baptist Church where he found his love for Christ. He was a member of the Free Masons and a long time Boy Scout Master for troop #36, a true calling and passion.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 12, 2014 from 2 – 3 PM at Central Baptist Church fellowship hall. A celebration of life service will follow at 3:00 PM in the church sanctuary. Interment will follow the funeral service at Lakeview Memory Gardens in York.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to, York Place Children’s Home, 234 Kings Mountain St, York, SC 29745, or Central Baptist Church Youth Program, 110 Ross Cannon St, York, SC 29745.
