James "Jim" Gordon

York – James (Jim) D. Gordon, 90, passed away Aug. 23, 2016, after a short illness. Jim was born in York County, S.C. on July 25, 1926 to the late Sumpter Mills Gordon and Mona Montgomery Gordon. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Fort Belvoir, Virginia before being stationed at Fort Churchill, located in Manitoba, Canada, where he was a heavy equipment operator. Jim was a tree surgeon by trade, honing his skills first with Davey Tree Service and then with National Capital Parks in Washington, D.C. He moved back to his hometown of York in 1956 where he continued working as a self-employed tree surgeon. Being an avid outdoorsman, Jim spent most of his free time in his woodworking shop or in the outdoors doing the things he loved the most, hunting and fishing. Jim will be fondly remembered for the way he would elaborate on a mundane subject to create a humorous tale.
Jim is survived by his wife, Edith M. Gordon, and their two sons; David (Susan) Gordon of Clover, S.C. and James C. (Jeanne) Gordon of Lexington, S.C.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by three sisters; Kitty Darby, Sue Bell Gladden and Gertrude Ray; and six brothers; Mills, Ervin, Mansfield, Harvey, Calvin and William.
The funeral will be at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 26, 2016 at Bethesda Presbyterian Church with Rev. Doug Blaikie officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 25, 2016 from 6 – 8 PM at Bratton Funeral Home in York.
