William Barry Allison, Jr., 93, of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of the late Mary Blair Allison, passed away after a brief illness on Saturday, January 11, 2015.
William was born on February 27, 1921 in Clover, South Carolina, son of the late William Barry Allison, Sr. and Mary Eva Mitchell Allison. He graduated from Erskine College in Due West, South Carolina with a major in Mathematics. It was here he began his love for music. William served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and Naval Reserve for 20 years.
William and Mary moved to Jacksonville, Alabama where he began his career as Education Specialist at Fort McClellan, Alabama, retiring after 30 years. While in Jacksonville, William received his Masters at Jacksonville State University and remained a devoted alumni attending all of the JSU football and basketball games that he could.
He had a strong Christian faith and faithfully attended First Presbyterian Church of Jacksonville where he served as deacon and elder and was a devoted choir director for 20 years.
William is survived by his two daughters, Christie Allison Atkerson and Barrie Allison Hornbuckle; one sister, Betty Allison Lewis; four grandchildren, Liz, Erin, Logan, and Mason and three great grandchildren, Henry, Eva Cain, and Samuel. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and his cousin, Faye Mitchell Blair. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Mary Blair Allison; a sister, Marynette Allison Whitlow; and one grandson, Will Hornbuckle.
Funeral services with Naval Honors for William Allison will be held at 2:00 on Friday, January 23, 2015 at Sharon A.R.P. Church, 3915 York Street, Sharon, South Carolina 29742. The family will receive visitors from 1:30-2:00 in the Sharon A.R.P. Church before the service.
